Connect a Puppet instance

Connect Puppet instances to display Puppet management information for your cloud virtual machines (VMs), and bring unmanaged VMs under Puppet management.

You must connect at least one Puppet instance before you can manage cloud VMs using Puppet.

Before you begin

Before connecting a Puppet instance, ensure the following:

  • You know the URL of the instance.

  • You have a user token with the required permissions. See Obtain a Puppet user token.

  • The Puppet bridge is installed and ready to run on the bridge host. See Install the Puppet bridge.

  • The Puppet bridge can communicate with both Perforce Unified Compliance and the target instance.

Begin connecting the instance

  1. In the navigation pane, select Integrations.

  2. Select the Puppet tab.

The page lists any existing Puppet connections. To update existing connections, see Manage connected Puppet instances.

  3. Select Connect Puppet. A Connect Puppet wizard opens.

Step 1: Review the prerequisites

The Prerequisites step lists the following requirements:

  • The URL of the instance

  • The user token associated with Perforce Unified Compliance. See Obtain a Puppet user token.

  • The Puppet bridge installed on a bridge host.

To confirm that all prerequisites are in place:

  • Click Next.

Step 2: Enter details of the Puppet instance

  1. In the Instance details step, enter the following information:

    • Name: A label for this Puppet connection.

    • Puppet URL: The URL of the instance.

    • Puppet user token: All Perforce Unified Compliance actions will be taken with the permissions granted to this user.

  2. Click Connect instance.

Perforce Unified Compliance generates a configuration file that is used to initialize the Puppet bridge.

Step 3: Download the bridge configuration file

In the Setup step, select Download configuration file.

After downloading the configuration file, complete the remaining steps within 30 minutes. If setup is not completed within that time frame, disconnect the pending instance from Perforce Unified Compliance. See Manage Puppet instances. After you remove the pending instance, restart the connection process for the instance and generate a new configuration file.

Step 4: Use the configuration file to initialize the Puppet bridge

  1. Go to the host where the Puppet bridge is installed.

  2. Run the CLI command on the host to activate the Puppet bridge using the configuration file. For instructions, see Initialize the Puppet bridge.

Initialization applies the configuration generated by Perforce Unified Compliance and starts the bridge service so that it can establish an outbound connection to Perforce Unified Compliance.

  3. Return to Perforce Unified Compliance.

  4. Select Done.

View connection status

After you complete setup, the Puppet instance appears on the Puppet tab of the Integrations page. Its Status shows as Pending until the instance is fully connected.
